L&D Event on Creativity & Leadership – 22 October 2015

“Today it’s less about structures, more about capability… You can’t manage change; it manages you. Focus on outcomes”

Chris Bones, Professor of Creativity and Leadership at MBS and the Dean of Henley Business School, offered the above insight on the challenges facing leaders in these fast changing times during a fascinating talk at the Copthorne Hotel on Salford’s Clippers Quay on Wednesday, October 22nd.  Professor Bones argued persuasively about how our capacity to learn new things has now been outstripped by the pace of change.  The award winning author of The Cult of the Leader said that our ability to “focus on outcomes” is therefore crucial.

His message was reassuring and positive, assuming that changes are based on data not assumptions.  And, crucially, that data are used intelligently. He cited the example of how The Economist had been able to greatly increase its readership by taking on customers’ feedback.  Professor Bones lamented the culture of misorganization, “the twenty-first century malaise” as he dubbed it, which afflicts some employers.

The lead for strategic alignment for Good Growth challenged his audience to think about: “what do I want?”; “how do I want it” and, finally, “how do I measure it?”

A one-time English as a foreign language teacher, Professor Bones is fascinated by words and what we associate with them.  Two really interested him; trust and confidence.  The former, he elicited, is bound up with the individual, whereas the latter should be associated with management and organizations.  Critically, trust as a concept is something we bestow on a person and can strip from them if we feel let down.  The implication for managers who lost their team’s trust was clear.

The final issue that Professor Bones raised was that of integrity, which like confidence and trust matters to all of us on a personal and organizational level.  Professor Bones drew on personal experience of his time in a senior HR role at Cadbury Schweppes. The tragic death of a well-respected young colleague, whose handful of personal core values which informed his behaviour were found on his computer, led Professor Bones to challenge everyone to decide their core values.

Professor Bones recommended William Bridges’ Managing Transitions, which was first published in 1995, for further reading.

Public Policy Group Meeting

At our Public Policy Panel meeting in February we are very lucky to be able to have Dianah Worman OBE, CIPD Diversity Adviser, joining us.

Dianah

Dianah is the Adviser on diversity for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. She directs the Institute’s diversity research programme and leads the development of good practice guidance on diversity to help employers make progress in this challenging and complex field. She also leads the Institute’s public policy work on diversity.

Her current agenda includes ground-breaking research on managing diversity and the business case: age, disability, equal pay, harassment and bullying, as well as race, work–life balance and employing people with criminal records. Some of this research has already been published in a variety of CIPD guides and reports designed to raise awareness about diversity, stimulate thinking about sensible changes in employers’ approaches to the employment and development of people at work and support good practice which is both fair and makes business sense.
Dianah is currently on various government advisory boards and steering committees such as those dealing with the development of a gender equality indicator, the review of age legislation, approaches to addressing the ageing UK population and workforce, and the rehabilitation of ex-offenders through work. Among others, she has worked with Joseph Rowntree, UMIST, Sheffield Hallam, the European Business Network for Social Cohesion, the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR), and various university research centres such as CROW, NIACE and CAWA.
She was awarded an OBE for her services to diversity, in the Queen’s birthday honours list in 2006.

Some exciting news for you regarding our Social HR Conference on 16th October

We are happy to announce that Ryan Cheyne will be the closing the conference at the Lancashire Cricket Club. Ryan Cheyne is People Director of Pets at Home, the UK’s leading pet specialist retailer. In the 9 years Ryan has been with Pets at Home it has become recognised as a retail employer of choice being named as the No 1 Big Company to work for in 2013 by the Sunday Times, having come 2nd in 2012. In his role as People Director he finds innovative ways to bring Pets at Home’s core values to life, as his team works to build the engagement levels of colleagues across the business. A recent engagement survey with a 98 percent participation rate more than 6000 colleagues produced an engagement index of 93 percent.

Ryan is also the Chair of Trustees for Support Adoption for Pets, a charity that supports national and local animal rehoming centres in providing thousands of pets each year with a second chance of happiness.

Prior to Pets at Home, Ryan was an HR Manager with Topshop/Topman and before that he spent 13 years at Argos in a variety of retail management and HR roles.

For fun, Ryan is a regular tweeter on all sorts of topic matters which is why his experience on Social HR will be very interesting and valuable.
